Autograph quotation signed: "von Koester" in black ink, 1p,
4½x7. Aboard the ship Kaiser Wilhelm II, Kiel, June 20, 1906. In
full: "Durch Zucht zur Frucht". Roughly translated: "Through
discipline the result". Signed as High Admiral, General Inspector of the
Navy and Chief of the active Battle Fleet. Hans von Koester
(1844-1928) was a German naval officer who served in the Prussian Navy and
later in the Imperial German Navy. Koester became the first active-duty
German naval officer to attain the rank of Grossadmiral (Grand Admiral) on June
28, 1905; the previous recipients of this rank were Kaiser Wilhelm II of
Germany and King Oscar II of Sweden (both in 1901). He retired as a Grand
Admiral. Kiel Bay separates Germany from islands east of mainland Denmark.
Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
Accompanied by an old 6x4½ magazine image of a photograph captioned:
"A Notable German Naval Group". Hans von Koester is pictured surrounded
by his Admirals, Chiefs of Squadrons and Captains. Mounted to paper of similar
size to reinforce a 2-inch diagonal tear at upper left, which ends with a
1¾x¾-inch portion missing. Two items.
