HYMAN G. RICKOVER. TLS: "H.G. Rickover", 1p, 8x10½. USS Tinosa, At Sea, North Atlantic, 1964 September 15. To Mrs. Fern Bernstein, Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, Washington, D.C. In part: "We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS TINOSA our twenty-first attack type nuclear submarine. The ship successfully completed all tests, including full power operation, both surface and submerged...In addition to the twenty-one attack nuclear submarines, we also have twenty-seven Polaris type submarines, making a total of forty-eight nuclear submarines in operation...." In 1946, Rickover was assigned to the atomic submarine project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He helped convince the Navy that nuclear sea power was feasible, and directed the planning and construction of the world's first atomic-powered submarine, Nautilus, launched in 1954, and many other nuclear-powered ships. As is evident by this letter, Admiral Rickover personally observed tests conducted on nuclear-powered submarines. Fine condition.
