Inscribed signature: "Autographed for Jugter/Chaplin September 13,
1987/Jerauld Wright/Admiral", 5x3 index card. Admiral Jerauld Wright
(1899-1995) became in 1917 the youngest person to graduate from the U.S.
Naval Academy. He served on anti-submarine duty on a Mediterranean gunboat
in World War I. He was Naval Aide to Presidents Coolidge (1924-1926) and
Hoover (1929-1931). In World War II, after commanding the Battleship
Mississippi, he was assigned staff duties planning the Allied invasions of North
Africa, Sicily and Italy; and he conducted clandestine missions in the
Mediterranean. He then moved to the Pacific, commanding an amphibious group
and then a carrier division in battles in the Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf,
Kwajalein, Saipan and Okinawa. Later he commanded the U.S. Atlantic Fleet
and joint NATO forces in the Atlantic (1954-1960). Retiring as a 4-star
admiral, he served on the CIA's Board of Estimates, finishing his distinguished
career as Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan, 1963-1965).
