LOUIS MOUNTBATTEN of BURMA
TLS signed four years before the World War II commander was assassinated by the IRA
Typed Letter signed: "Mountbatten of Burma", 1p, 7x9. Romsey, Hampshire, England, 1975 May 23. To Mr. Godward. In full: "Thank you for your letter of the 13th May asking for a signed photograph for your collection. Since you use your collection for raising money for charity I am happy to send you a photograph herewith." Mountbatten was Supreme Allied Commander in the Southeast Asia Theater (1943-1946) and directed the recapture of Burma. He served as the last British Viceroy of India, overseeing the transfer of power to the Nehru government and the partition of Pakistan. Mountbatten was killed aboard his fishing boat in Donegal Bay, County Sligo, Ireland, near his home, by an explosion set by Irish Republican Army terrorists on August 27, 1979. Prince Charles had regarded Mountbatten, a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, as his Honorary Grandfather. Fine condition.
