MOUNTBATTEN OF BURMA
Mountbatten of Burma sends a typed letter of thanks for the Christmas wishes.
Typed Letter Signed: "yours ever/Mountbatten of Burma", 1p, 6x8. Broadlands, Hampshire, 1974 December 4. To Academy Award-winning actress Joan Crawford. In full: "Thank you so much for your letter of good Christmas wishes. How right you are to devote your energies next year to charities instead of sending out your greetings. As you know I did this in 1960 and you are one of the few people I have been writing to to thank for Christmas greetings, as those who send cards I don't answer any more. Therefore, my best wishes to you for future Christmases as well as this one." "Dear Joan" in Mountbatten's hand. Slightly creased. Fine condition. With original postmarked envelope bearing typed address to Joan Crawford in New York. Creased and soiled. Torn open at top. Actor Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., JOAN CRAWFORD's second husband (1929-1933), the first American officer to command a British flotilla of raiding craft during a commando operation in WWII, served under Mountbatten. MOUNTBATTEN was Supreme Allied Commander in the Southeast Asia Theater (1943-1946) and directed the recapture of Burma. He was killed aboard his fishing boat in Donegal Bay, County Sligo, Ireland, near his home, by an explosion set by Irish Republican Army terrorists on August 27, 1979. Two items.
