ADMIRAL LYNDE D. McCORMICK
Signing as Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic
Signature: "Lynde D. McCormick/Admiral U. S. Navy/Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic", 8½x3. US Naval officer Lynde D. McCormick (1895-1956) served aboard the battleship Wyoming with the British Grand Fleet in World War I, present at the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. After serving as a captain of submarines and destroyers and teaching at the US Naval Academy, he became operations officer for the Battleship of the US Battle Force at Pearl Harbor (1939). In 1940 he became operations officer for Pacific Fleet commander Husband Kimmel, retained by Admiral Nimitz after Kimmel was relieved in the wake of the Pearl Harbor debacle. He then served in Washington on the staff of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Ernest King, and finally got into combat in 1944, winning a second Gold Star for his Legion of Merit as commander of a battleship division in the assault on Okinawa. McCormick took himself out of the running for Chief of Naval Operations in 1951, declaring that he preferred a ship command. This wish was granted, when he became Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet (1951-1954) and the first Supreme Commander of NATO Forces in the Atlantic (1954). Multiple folds. Corners slightly worn. Water spot on 'U.S' of signature. Heavily toned. Top edge frayed from seperation. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
