Autograph Letter Signed: "M. Saito" in English, 1½p, 5x8.
Imperial Navy Department, Tokyo, 1905 February 19. To Mr. C. Bryant,
Haver Hill, Massachusetts. In part: "I have sent you by this mail the
photographs [not present] of our two Leading Naval officers of today. I
hope you will print them if you desire to do so...." Makoto Saito (1858-1936)
served as naval Aide-de-Camp to Emperor Mutsuhito (Meiji) during the
Sino-Japanese War. Admiral Saito served in the Russo-Japanese War
(1904-1905). He was Minister for the Navy (1913-1914) and Governor General
of Korea (1919-1927, 1929-1931). Saito was Prime Minister of Japan from
1932-1934. In February 1936, a group of young officers tried to seize
control of the government and impose a new Cabinet on Emperor Hirohito. The
revolt failed, but 78-year-old Viscount Makoto Saito was among those officers
who were assassinated. Lightly creased. Light stain at right blank
margin. Glue remnant of partially affixed caption along bottom edge of first
page. Three tape stains along left edge of first page. Folds, ½-inch separation
at lower mid-vertical fold. Overall, fine condition.
