The U.S. Navy Admiral signs a 3¼x1¼ slip of paper. Extremely rare!
Signature: "R.E. Coontz/U.S.S. Seattle", 3¼x1¼ slip of paper, affixed to a 5x2½ blank white sheet of paper (2 surfaces). Robert E. Coontz (1864-1935) was born in Hannibal, Missouri. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (1885), he fought during the Spanish American War and was executive officer of the USS Nebraska during the Great White Fleet's round the world cruise. Other assignments included Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy, governor of Guam, commander of the USS Georgia during World War I and Chief of Naval Operations in the Pacific Fleet. As Chief of Naval Operations, Coontz helped convert the USS Lexington and USS Saratoga into aircraft carriers, brought the USS Langley into active service and established the Naval Research Laboratory. He later served as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Fleet and Commandant of the 5th Naval District. The USS Coontz and USS Admiral R. E. Coontz were commissioned in the Admiral's honor. Fine condition.
