ROBERT E. PEARY
Before discovering the North Pole, he sends a Navy order to be published in "Engineering News".
TLS: "R.E. Peary" as Civil Engineer, U.S.N., 1p, 8x10½. Department of the Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, Washington, D.C., 1903 May 15. To the Editor of the Engineering News, New York. In full: "I enclose herewith copies of Navy Yard Order No. 376 for notice in the columns of the Engineering News, if you think it of interest." In 1881, 25-year-old Robert E. Peary entered the U.S. Navy as a civil engineer and for several years served in Nicaragua, where he was engaged in making surveys for the Nicaragua Canal. He became interested in Arctic exploration and made a trip to the interior of Greenland in 1886. In 1908, Peary set out on his third quest for the North Pole. From Ellesmere Island, accompanied by Matthew Henson and four Eskimos, he was the first to reach the North Pole on April 6, 1909. Lightly creased. Light "haloing" of type. Soiled at lower right blank corner. Overall, fine condition.
