Shot down in the South Pacific during WWII, rose to Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff.
Photograph signed: "T.H. Moorer/Admiral, U.S. Navy/Chief of Naval
Operations". B/w, 7½x9¼. Moorer, with Patrol Squadron
22 of Fleet Air Wing 10, Asiatic Fleet, at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, was
shot down in the Arafura Sea north of Australia two months later; the ship that
rescued him was torpedoed. In 1943, he was given command of Bombing Squadron 132
operating across the central Atlantic. Moorer served as Chief of Naval
Operations (1967-1970) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1970-1974). He
is a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Slight vertical crease
from top center touches forehead but does not materially affect the image,
diagonal creases at upper right corner. Fine condition.
