First Day Cover Signed: "T.H. Moorer/Admiral, U.S.N (RET)". 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Naval Aviation, postmarked San Diego, CA, August 20, 1961. 4c stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Moorer (1912-2004),with Patrol Squadron 22 of Fleet Air Wing 10, Asiatic Fleet, at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941,was shot down in the Arafura Sea north of Australia two months later; the ship that rescued him was torpedoed. In 1943, he was given command of Bombing Squadron 132 operating across the central Atlantic. Moorer served as Chief of Naval Operations (1967-1970) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1970-1974). He is a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Felt tip lightly faded (fully legible). Lightly worn at corners. Otherwise, Fine condition.
