THOMAS H. MOORER
Member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
TLS: "Thomas H. Moorer", 1p, 7x8½. No place, 1977 August 24. To Miss Marylou Gillen, Shirley, N.Y. In full: "I was pleased to receive your letter and learn of your interest not only in our nation's history but also in the future of our country. To answer your questions specifically, I would not be so bold as to predict that we will always have peace in your generation or following generations for that matter. However, I believe if we remain very strong we will not have a war and certainly in my view you have no reason to fear that you will be killed by atomic bombs. I am confident that such a thing will not happen so long as we remain alert and, as I said, maintain overwhelming strength." During World War II, Moorer was in command of Bombing Squadron 132 that operated across the central Atlantic. From 1967-1970, he was Chief of Naval Operations and served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1970-1974. Horizontal folds do not touch signature. Slightly soiled at lower blank left corner. Fine condition.
