Sims cannot remember the Navy baseball player who met the King at the Army-Navy
game that was played in London during WWI.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm S. Sims", 1p, 8x10½. U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode
Island, 1919 August 22. To Mr. A.E. Gekdhof, The Newspaper Enterprise Association,
Washington, D.C. In full: "The photograph referred to in your letter of August 20, 1919, was
taken before the baseball game played between the American Army and Navy teams in London
on July 4, 1918. The baseball player shaking hands with the King is the captain of the Navy
team, I do not now recall his name." Last seven words handwritten by Sims. Admiral
WILLIAM S. SIMS (1858-1936) former naval aide to President Theodore Roosevelt, was
Commander of all U.S. naval forces in European waters from 1917-1919. Sims, President
of the U.S. Naval College when he wrote this letter, was awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize
for Victory at Sea. Lightly creased, file holes at upper blank margin. Lightly foxed in blank
areas. Diagonal fold at right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
