ADOLF HITLER
Shown in civilian suit with swastika pin, signed near the time of his imprisonment (1924)
Photograph signed: "Adolf Hitler". B/w, 6¾x9. Austrian-born Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), an embittered German army veteran of World War I, became involved an extremist politics in Munich at war's end. A charismatic orator, Hitler promoted a radical program based on ultra-nationalism, anti-Semitism and anti-communism. By 1921, he was the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP in German, better known as the Nazi Party). In 1923, Hitler and a small band of supporters attempted to emulate Mussolini's "March on Rome" and seize power, but this "Beer Hall Putsch" was easily dispersed by the Munich police. Hitler was arrested, tried and sentenced to five years in prison. However, Hitler exploited this apparent setback, pleading his cause at his trial, and writing while in prison Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"), his political manifesto. Treated leniently by sympathetic guards and pardoned in December 1924, Hitler changed tactics by using the electoral mechanisms of the Weimar Republic to win parliamentary seats. With the onset of the Depression in 1930, the German electorate was increasingly attracted to extremist parties, and the NSDAP was well positioned to reap the benefit. Observing formal legalities while pursuing vicious street politics, the Nazis became the second largest party in the Reichstag in September 1930, and Hitler ran second to World War I General Von Hindenberg in the Presidential race the following year. Sworn in as Chancellor in January 1933, Hitler used a series of ruthless maneuvers - without ever securing an electoral majority - to transform Germany's fragile parliamentary democracy into a totalitarian state subservient to him. His subsequent decade as one of history's greatest malefactors, ended by his suicide in the ruins of Berlin on April 20, 1945, is well known. Creased. Lightly soiled. Lightly worn.1x1 inch piece of tape on verso. Paper from previous matting affixed to verso. ½x¼ inch piece missing from bottom right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
