The Nazi-era German scientist signed this card in blue ink
Signature: "Adolf Butenandt" on a 3x1½ card. Adolf Butenandt (1903-1995) was a WWII-era German chemist who was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Due to Nazi law, he was forced to turn down the award, although he later accepted the award in 1949. Much of his work at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biochemistry was military technology-related. He joined the Nazi Party in 1936, a decision for which he was criticized after WWII. Butenandt's primary motivation for joining the party - self-preservation or doctrinal allegiance - have never been truly discovered. From 1960-1972, he was the President of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science. Pencil marking on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
