AGATHA CHRISTIE
The well-known mystery novelist signs this handwritten letter with Christmas wishes in her married name from her second marriage
Autograph letter signed: "Agatha Mallowan", 1p, 5½x7. Swan Court, [London] S.W. 3, (no year) December 17. To Mrs. Griggs. In full, "I enclose cheque for £5 - as a Xmas present to get yourselves some Xmas fare - I've also sent a parcel with a few personal remembrances - Have a good time & don't drive the car under the influence!! Merry Xmas to you all from us both." Prolific British mystery writer Agatha Christie (1890-1976) sold some two billion books - half in English and half in over 45 other languages - third only to the Bible and Shakespeare. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920), introduced her brilliant Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. Her last, 1976's Sleeping Murder, featured Miss Jane Marple, who made her first appearance in 1930 in The Murder at the Vicarage. In all, Christie wrote 79 novels and short story collections and a dozen plays, including the long-running The Mousetrap. She was awarded Britain's highest honor, Order of Dame Commander of the British Empire, in 1971. Lightly creased and soiled. Horizontal fold touches one letter of text. Otherwise, fine condition.
