The prominent essayist accepts a speaking invitation
Autograph Letter signed: "Agnes Repplier", 2 pages (integral
leaf), 10¾x8½. 1208 Spruce Street [Philadelphia], February 26,
n.y. To "Dear Mrs. Longstreth". In full: "I have thought over
your letter long and seriously, and have decided to give myself the pleasure of
accompanying you to Louisville in May. It is very good in you to ask me, and the
temptation is too great to be resisted. I shall be much pleased to read my paper
on the Business Training of Women; and, of course, I shall prefer to travel with
you and your friends, if you will kindly take me in your party. Trusting I may
see you many times between this and then, I remain, Cordially yours".
Agnes Repplier (1855-1950) was a prolific American essayist, with works
appearing frequently in leading journals such as the Atlantic Monthly, The
New Republic, Harper's and Life. Some of her titles include "Books and Men"
(1888), "The Fireside Sphinx" (1901), "In Pursuit of Laughter" (1936) and the
autobiographical "Eight Decades" (1937). She also wrote biographic sketches
of prominent Catholics, including explorer/missionaries Jacques Marquette
and Junipero Serra. "Mrs. Longstreth" was probably Mrs. Edward Longstreth, like
Repplier a leader of women's clubs in Philadelphia. One vertical and two
horizontal folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
