Ahmad Jamal sends an autograph note on a photocopy of an article that
he does not like.
Autograph Note Signed: "Ahmad", 1p, 8½x11¾. No place, no date,
but circa 1970. Written at right margin of photocopied magazine article
to "Jack", his booking agent, Jack Whittemore. In full:
"Don't like this Article - [word crossed out] Recording
January 3rd, 4th & 5th. Was by yesterday but policemen were
diverting [word crossed out] traffic for some unknown reason Copies of
Correspondence from [illegible] enclosed". Two column article is
headed: "Jamal and diamonds - they both glitter". Begins: "Really, to
entirely appreciate Ahmad Jamal's piano playing, it would be helpful if you were
in the diamond business. Both diamonds and Jamal, who is at the Colonial all
this week, have several properties in common: polish, for example, and
brilliance and a kind of beauty that's pure, not spontaneous and, once you've
removed yourself from the immediate spell, not all that lasting...." American
jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, born Frederick Russell Jones in 1930, who is
known for his use of rhythm, open space and multi-tonal melodic lines,
played a key influence in the sound of trumpeter Miles Davis. Jamal, who first
gained notice at the Pershing nightclub in Chicago, had a major hit with his
1963 album, Poinciana, which was recorded live on tour at the venue.
His other recordings include Ahmad's Blues (1951), Live at The
Pershing & The Spotlight Club (1958), The Awakening (1970),
Jamaica (1974), Crystal (1987), The Essence Part I (1995)
and After Fajr (2005). Jamal, who also performed the title tune for the
soundtrack of the film, M*A*S*H, has also toured in major clubs in the
U.S. and at European jazz festivals since the 1980s. Lightly creased with folds,
not at signature. Shaded and torn at lower edge. Usual black marks from
photocopying touch writing (all completely legible). Overall, fine
condition.
