and Famous Events
Book Page signed: "A. R. Spofford", 4¼x2¼. Signed below the title of
The Library of Historic Characters and Famous Events of All Nations and All
Ages (1900), edited by Spofford. Ainsworth Rand Spofford (1825-1908) was a
newspaper editor and publisher active in the anti-slavery movement and the
formation of the Republican Party. President Lincoln appointed him Chief
Assistant Librarian of the Library of Congress in1861. From 1864-1897, he was
the sixth Librarian of Congress. Spofford oversaw expansion of the national
library from 60,000 to over one million volumes, and convinced the Smithsonian
to turn its own library over to the Library of Congress. He lobbied successively
for an 1870 law requiring that all materials copyrighted in the US be supplied
in two copies to the Library. He pushed for construction of a new library
building, completed just as he retired. The book shown here was not quite as
comprehensive as the title implies. Only Western civilization is represented.
Still, it was an impressive compendium, which can be found on the web (and no
doubt in the Library of Congress). Irregularly cut edges. Fine
condition.
