AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR WILLIAM ELLIOT
The Royal Air Force Commander handwrites and signs this letter on blue stationary
saying he is glad to send his autograph
Autograph letter signed: “William Elliot” in blue ink. 5¼x7. June 1, 1954. Written on
letterhead of 20, Ovington Court, Kensington. In full: “Dear Mr. Broll, I got back from Ireland
yesterday to find your letter. I am very glad to send you my autograph which I do as follows”. Air
Chief Marshal Sir William Elliott (1896-1971) was a senior Royal Air Force commander.
Elliott joined the Army Service Corps in 1915 and then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps
in 1917. He became Assistant Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence in 1937. He
was then made Assistant Secretary of the War Cabinet Secretariat in 1939. During World
War II he served as Commander of multiple units and divisions, After the War he served as
Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Policy) and then became Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief
at RAF Fighter Command in 1947. He went on to be Chief Staff Officer to the Minister of
Defence in 1949 and Chairman of the British Joint Services Mission to Washington, D.C.
and UK Representative on the NATO Standing Group in 1951 before he retired in 1954.
Elliot received many titles, including: Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order,
Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, and Knight Commander of the Order of the
British Empire. Corners rounded. Lightly stained in lower left corner. Horizontal fold across
center. Otherwise, fine condition.
