Britain's leading air ace of World War II, later an Air Vice-Marshall, signs an envelope marking the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's trans-Atlantic flight.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Johnnie Johnson", 6½x3¾. Cover bearing printed photo of Charles Lindbergh in the cockpit of the Spirit of St Louis, bearing special postmark Compex Station, Chicago, Illinois, May 27, 1977, and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first solo flight across the Atlantic, 13-cent US Liberty Bell stamp affixed. James "Johnnie" Johnson (1915-2001) was a Royal Air Force pilot in Britain. Originally rejected from the Air Force due to a rugby injury, he became the top scoring British ace of World War II, with 38 confirmed Luftwaffe kills. His first victory was on June 26, 1941, when he shot down a Messerschmitt Bf 109 over France. He flew Spitfires in the Battle of Britain, escorted bombers over Germany, with a total of over 1,000 missions during the war, and finished his combat service in the Korean War. He was later promoted to Air Vice-Marshall. Corners lightly worn. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
