Britain's top air ace of World War II signs an FDC honoring President
Eisenhower.
First Day Cover signed: "Johnnie Johnson", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring
US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 6,
1970, 6-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. James "Johnnie"Johnson (1915-2001) was a Royal Air Force pilot in Britain.
Originally rejected from the Air Force due to a rugby injury, he became the
top scoring British ace of World War II, with 38 confirmed Luftwaffe kills.
His first victory was on June 26, 1941, when he shot down a Messerschmitt Bf
109 over France. He flew Spitfires in the Battle of Britain, escorted bombers
over Germany, with a total of over 1,000 missions during the war, and
finished his combat service in the Korean War. He was later promoted to Air
Vice-Marshall. Corners lightly worn. Slightly toned. Fine condition.
