Tamiroff". B/w, 7¼x9¼. Russian-born actor Akim Tamiroff (1899-1972), who was
of Armenian descent, was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a
Supporting Role for The General Died at Dawn (1936) and For Whom
the Bell Tolls (1943, for which he won the Golden Globe for Best
Supporting Actor). In 1923, he came to New York, where he found steady work
with the Theatre Guild from the mid-1920s to the 1930s. Tamiroff had his
first film role in Okay, America! in 1932, and he would go on to appear
in dozens of feature films, including The Barbarian (1933), The
Merry Widow (1934), The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935),
Naughty Marietta (1935), Anthony Adverse (1936),
The Buccaneer (1938), Union Pacific (1939), The Corsican
Brothers (1941), Tortilla Flat (1942), The Bridge of San Luis
Rey (1944), Anastasia (1956), Ocean's Eleven (1960), Lord
Jim (1965), Great Catherine (1968) and The Great Bank Robbery
(1969). Tamiroff was also seen as a guest star on numerous TV series,
from Schlitz Playhouse of the Stars (1952) to Then Came Bronson
(1969), and he returned to Broadway in 1959. Surface creased, touching
writing and forehead of facial image. Overall, fine condition.
