Price: $440.00
AL JENNINGS. TLS: "Al" in pencil, 1p, 8¼x11. Tarzana,
Cal., 1940 January 14. To Lawrence and Wife. In part: "Just got
word for me to be in Mexico City not later than Feb. Ist. Things are popping
down there right now and may burst any day. I am inclosing two clippings from
Hollywood paper taken from Mexico daily paper (not included).
Alamazan (sic) is the candidate for president he is the one I told
you about while in El Paso with General V...." Two corrections and two
words in Jennings' hand. Al Jennings was a gunslinging outlaw who was a
convicted cattle rustler and train robber. He banked on his notoriety to appear
in a handful of Hollywood silent films such as 1924's The Sea Hawk and
Fighting Fury. In the 1940 election in Mexico, General Manuel Avila
Camacho defeated General JUAN ANDREW ALMAZÁN, a revolutionary soldier turned
millionaire industrialist, in a disputed election which caused Almazán to flee
to Cuba after making accusations of fraud. He eventually returned to Mexico and
retired to private life. Creased. Folds, which are shaded touching text but not
signature.
