Price: $550.00
AL JENNINGS. Typed Letter signed: "Al J", 1 p, 8¼x11. On
personal letterhead. Hollywood, California, 1939 July 10. To "Dear
Lawrence and Wife". In full: "Your good letter and the shoes
arrived ok. Glad to hear from you and know alls [sic] well. You will
pardon my delay in replying to your letter when I tell you that I went with a
picture company as an extra down in the valley for six dollars per day. Have to
eat you know, strange but true. Got a letter from Alberto. He has to explain his
association with a certain Americano before his former associates, before
he gets his discharge, then all is well. Improvements are being made; goats,
etc, there will be no failing next time. His father hasn't seen party of the
first part yet. We will know soon. Holmes was here. He got no information. Tell
me how things are with you up there. I will keep you posted. Give my best to
everybody, that includes the pup and our friend the Poet. He has some awful good
stuff in his writings. Your pal." Al Jennings was a gunslinging outlaw who
was a convicted cattle rustler and train robber, which might explain his
habit of cryptic references in the letter. He banked on his notoriety to appear
in a handful of Hollywood silent films such as 1924's The Sea Hawk
and Fighting Fury. He was 97 when he died in 1961. Slightly creased.
Faded at horizontal and vertical folds, with one vertical folding touching "J"
of signature. Overall, fine condition.
