AL BARLICK. Photograph signed: "Al Barlick". B/w with green hue, 8x9¾. ©1989, TV Sports Mailbag. A WWII Coast Guard veteran with a salty tongue, umpire Al Barlick was firm and tough and demanded respect. He earned the respect of his peers and players alike with booming, basso calls, clear and decisive hand signals, knowledge of the rules, proficiency on balls and strikes, ability to anticipate and then handle rough situations and unceasing hustle. Barlick umpired a record seven All-Star Games, spanning four decades. A no-nonsense type, he stopped a game at Shea Stadium to have the coaching box re-chalked and forfeited a game in Philadelphia when unruly fans hit him with a tomato and fellow ump Lee Ballanfant with a bottle. Barlick was a professional umpire for five decades; and at age 25, he was one of the youngest to reach the majors, where he worked for 27 full seasons. Barlick was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989. Copyright stamp on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
