AL CHRISTIE
12x9 photo of the Nestor Comedy Company, inscribed and signed by Christie on
Election Day, 1918
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Sam P. Behrendt/Nestor Comedy
Company/Universal City/Al E. Christie/Nov. 5, 1918". Vintage b/w, 11¾x9¼. Al Christie
(1881-1951) was a Canadian-born director, producer and screenwriter. In 1910 he began
making one "Mutt & Jeff" 1-reel comedy per week for the Nestor Film Company. The
following year, he became director of Nestor's Hollywood studio, the first movie studio
built in that city. In 1916, Al Christie and his brother Charles established their own
Christie Film Company. Over his career, which concluded with the 1941 film Hands of
Destiny, Christie wrote 95 screenplays while producing and/or directing over 200 movies,
both short comedies and feature films. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Coincidentally, he signed this photo on Election Day, 1918, the day the American people
repudiated President Wilson's campaign for the League of Nations by voting Republican
majorities into both Houses of Congress. Lightly worn at corners. Lightly soiled at blank
margins. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
