Al Hirchfeld (1903-2003) was a serious artist, working in watercolors
and lithographs. He is far better known, however, for his caricatures of
entertainment scenes and people. After working as art director at early film
studios, he published his first newspaper caricature in 1925. His clever
drawings graced the covers of such publications as TV Guide, Time
and Rolling Stone, and were featured on two postage stamps. "The Line
King," as he was called in an Oscar-nominated 1996 film, worked for the
New York Times for over 70 years.Fine
