AL HIRSCHFELD
Page of sketches by caricaturist Al Hirschfeld and by Leslie Crozier
Wood, framed to 15½x18¼ in a black frame. Includes a sketch of a "ROOSKIE"
in a military uniform leading a horse.
Original art signed: "By/Al Hirschfeld" in pencil, with a
hand-drawn arrow pointing at a bust caricature of a woman in Victorian dress,
7x9¾ in a 15½x18¼ black frame. This page contains sketches by Hirschfeld and by
another artist, believed to be Leslie Crozier Wood. One of the sketches is of a
man in a military uniform leading a horse and signed "ROOSKIE" in an
unknown hand. AL HIRSCHFELD (1903-2003) was a serious artist, working
in watercolors and lithographs. He is far better known, however, for his
caricatures of entertainment scenes and people. After working as art
director at early film studios, he published his first newspaper caricature in
1925. His clever drawings graced the covers of such publications as TV
Guide, Time and Rolling Stone, and were featured on two
postage stamps. "The Line King," as he was called in an Oscar-nominated
1996 film, worked for the New York Times for over 70 years. LESLIE
CROZIER WOOD (1911-2004) was a multi-talented man who worked as an artist,
photographer, actor, musician and radio announcer. A soldier during World War
II, Wood photographed the Landsberg concentration camp and later was a sketch
artist at the Nuremberg war crimes trials. He also photographed the coronation
of George IV in 1936. Sketches are lightly toned and discolored along right
edge. Frame is lightly soiled. Otherwise in fine condition. Not framed in
Gallery of History style. Items have not been examined outside of frame. As is
framing purchase.
