AL MARTINO
Sheet of paper signed "Thanks a million" by singer Al Martino
Autograph note signed: "To George/Thanks a million/Al Martino", 5¼x7¾. Ink note (unknown
hand) at lower margin: "Famed Vocalist - Recording star". Although Martino (1927-2009),
born Jasper Cini had a string of hits from the early 1950s into the 1970s, he is perhaps best
known for his role as singer Johnny Fontane (a character supposedly based on Frank
Sinatra) in The Godfather(1972). After Martino had a smash hit with his debut single Here
in My Heart, he signed a recording contract with Capitol Records and released a string of Top
10 hits. Although his career in the U.S. waned somewhat when Martino was forced to flee to
Britain after a Mafia-connected management team wanted a piece of the action, Martino
re-established himself in America through a series of TV performances. His career rebounded
with the 1963 hit I Love You Because, and in 1965 he recorded his smash signature song
Spanish Eyes. Martino was also able to reach an entire new audience in 1972 through his role
in The Godfather. After parting with Capitol ten years later, the crooner continued to perform
in clubs, lounges and casinos. In 2000, he released another album, Style. Remnants of
newspaper column formerly affixed on verso show through faintly, touching signature.
Otherwise, fine condition.
