ALAN ALDAThe actor most famous for his starring role in the television show M*A*S*H signed this printed black and white photograph from the 1986 film Sweet Liberty Photograph Signed: “Peace / Alan Alda” in blue felt tip. 10¼x8. Actual image 9½x6½ with a white border (one surface). The signer starred in, wrote, and directed the film Sweet Liberty. Alan Alda (b. 1936) debuted on the screen in an episode of The Phil Silvers Show (in 1958), appearing in over a dozen movies and television shows until his signature role fourteen years later. As the wisecracking Army surgeon Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce in M*A*S*H (1972-1983), he won five Golden Globes out of eleven nominations. Alda knew that as popular as the television show was, it wouldn't last forever. As a result, he took advantage of an unusually lengthy production break to star in three films from 1978 to 1979: California Suite, Same Time, Next Year, and The Seduction of Joe Tynan. He made his theatrical-movie directorial debut in 1981 with The Four Seasons; it would prove to be his most successful film as a director. Alda has occasionally delighted in going against the grain of his carefully cultivated image with nasty, spiteful characterizations, most notably in Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and as death row inmate Caryl Chessman in the 1977 television movie Kill Me if You Can. Small scribble in pen on caption (still legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
