ALAN CRANSTON
The longtime Democratic Whip is photographed with a backdrop of the Capitol Building
Inscribed photograph signed: "For/Sid,/with best wishes./Alan Cranston/US Senate/1969". B/w, 8x10. Alan McGregor Cranston (1914-2000) served as Democratic U.S. Senator from California from 1969-1993. From 1977-1991, he was the Democratic Whip. From 1936-1938, Cranston was a foreign correspondent for International News Service (now UPI). He attributed much of the American public's misperceptions of Nazism to a version of Hitler's Mein Kampf. Having read the original German version, Cranston drafted a word-for-word translation of the book, which was published. His version, at a cover price of 10-cents, sold over 500,000 copies (it included Cranston's comments against Nazism). Hitler successfully sued him for copyright infringement and unauthorized revision. On November 20, 1991, Cranston was reprimanded by the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics for accepting $1 million in contributions from constituent Charles H. Keating, Jr., the head of the Lincoln Federal Savings and Loan Association. Cranston, one of the "Keating Five", was the only one to receive the formal reprimand for "improper conduct". Writing slightly light but completely legible. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners, tack holes at corners. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine condition.
