Autograph Letter signed: "Alan Napier", 1 page, 8½x11. Written to "Dear the
Hemmingways", in full: "Sorry to have taken so long - but your letter arrived just as I was
taking off for Connecticut to visit my daughter. You are damn right I am not an artist!!
This isn't at all what I saw in my minds eye and it looks nude because I don't know how to
"do" clothes best wishes to you and all your class" Alan Napier (1903-1988) began on the
English stage, before moving to Hollywood in 1940. Thereafter he played character parts in
dozens of films, but may be best remembered as Bruce Wayne's butler in the TV series
Batman (1966-1968). (Napier, who never read comics, had never heard of Batman and called
the offer of the part "ridiculous," until the salary was mentioned.) Napier was the cousin of
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Two filing holes at left edge. Slightly creased. Pencil
notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
