ALAN WRIGHT
Handwritten letter from Wright to an associate saying he has received
their comic panel and likes the style of writing they used, but thinks the story
itself is lacking
Autograph letter signed: "Alan Wright", in black ink, 3 pages
(integral leaf), 3¾x6. January 10, 1880. In part: "My dear Kinston
Parkes. Roe duly forwarded your panel on and I have received and read it and
intend setting to work at once upon the [illegible]. But frankly, whilst
liking the style, I must say I do not care much for the story tho' the plot is
decidedly good". Alan Wright (1864-1959) was a British illustrator
of the late 1800's, often remembered for his collaboration with illustrator
wife Anne Anderson, though he was well-respected in his own work. Wright's
illustrations could be found in various forms of print, often in magazines
and newspapers. His career was both heightened and ended, however, by his
association with author Frederick Rolfe, illustrating a number of his books
while Rolfe was under fire for his homosexuality. It was with Anderson that
Wright was able to make a living again, largely forgoing his old art style to
match her more innocent illustrations. Lightly toned. Corners slightly worn.
Normal mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
