ALAN WRIGHT
Handwritten letter of apology from Wright for missing the recipient's previous letter, going on to say he cannot hope to write a letter as charming as the one he received
Autograph letter signed: "Alan Wright", in black ink, 3¾x6, 3 pages (integral leaf). March 25, 1940. In part: "My dear Parkes The pen was idle in my hand when your charming little letter arrived and set it off at once without looking across the paper, but I cannot hope to avail the pretty things you say as I am not a [illegible] so forgive me if I am a little [illegible] in my writing". Alan Wright (1864-1959) was a British illustrator of the late 1800's, often remembered for his collaboration with illustrator wife Anne Anderson, though he was well-respected in his own work. Wright's illustrations could be found in various forms of print, often in magazines and newspapers. His career was both heightened and ended, however, by his association with author Frederick Rolfe, illustrating a number of his books while Rolfe was under fire for his homosexuality. It was with Anderson that Wright was able to make a living again, largely forgoing his old art style to match her more innocent illustrations. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Small tear on bottom right corner. Slightly soiled. Toned. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
