ALAN WRIGHT
The illustrator writes to an associate regarding his artwork for
several poems, saying that he hopes they meet the approval of the author and
that one of the poems is "charming"
Autograph letter signed: "Alan Wright", in black ink, 3 pages
(integral leaf), 4½x7. June 5, 1889. In part: "Dear Sir, I have done
as you wished with poems and hope [illegible] will be what you require +
will meet the approval of their author. The "motif" of the [illegible]
seems rather various for that form of verse but is nevertheless very pretty. The
[illegible] poem is charming. I think my little drawing had progressed
fairly well". Alan Wright (1864-1959) was a British illustrator of
the late 1800's, often remembered for his collaboration with illustrator
wife Anne Anderson, though he was well-respected in his own work. Wright's
illustrations could be found in various forms of print, often in magazines
and newspapers. His career was both heightened and ended, however, by his
association with author Frederick Rolfe, illustrating a number of his books
while Rolfe was under fire for his homosexuality. It was with Anderson that
Wright was able to make a living again, largely forgoing his old art style to
match her more innocent illustrations. Corners and edges slightly worn.
Paper remnants and adhesive residue on verso. Multiple folds. Some writing
faint, but clearly legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
