ALBERT GORE, SR.
Typed letter signed by the former Tennessee representative to friends about their kids children and visiting in the summer
Typed letter signed: "Albert Gore" as Tennessee Congressman, 1p, 8x10½ on House of Representatives letterhead. Washington, D.C., April 30, 1945. Addressed to Mr. D.A. Darwin, Cookeville, Tennessee. In full: "Dear Dero: I am glad to have your letter and to know that you enjoyed my report. I am especially pleased that Ted got the extra point in history because of it. I am sure you and Clemma are enjoying your new neighbors. Pauline and I wish we could get as nice an apartment as you all have in Carthage. We will look forward to a visit with you when we get home this Summer. Sincerely yours, (signature) Mr. D.A. Darwin Cookeville, Tennessee". Gore (1907-1998) was a Tennessee respresentative from 1939 to 1944, when he resigned to join the army, and was elected to the House of Representatives again from 1945 to 1953. He had only been in the House for four months after being re-elected in 1945 when he wrote this letter. He was elected one of Tennessee's senators from 1953 to 1971. Gore was only one of three Democratic senators from the former Confederate states who didn't sign the 1956 Southern Manifesto opposing integration. However, he did vote against other civil rights legislation, including the 1964 Civil Rights Act. His son, Al Gore, Jr., was William Clinton's vice president from 1993 to 2001, produced the global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth and won the 2007 Peace Prize, shared with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for his work on spreading the word about global warming. Lightly toned. Page has been folded in three and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
