ALBERT S. WILLIS
The U.S. Representative from Kentucky, who served as Ambassador to Hawaii, signs his name in black ink
Signature: "Albert S. Willis/ Louisville/ Ky" in black ink. 7¾x3¾ clipping. Albert S. Willis (1843-1897) was a United States Representative from Kentucky and Ambassador to Hawaii. A Kentucky lawyer, Willis served as prosecuting attorney for Jefferson County from 1874 to 1877 before being elected as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives for four consecutive Congresses (1877-1887), serving as chairman to the Committee on Rivers and Harbors. He had returned to Kentucky but was appointed in 1893 by President Cleveland to Minister to Hawaii; he was sent on a secret mission to meet with deposed Queen Lili'uokalani and obtain an promise of amnesty for those involved in the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii if Cleveland restored her to the throne. The plan was deemed a failure when the provisional Hawaiian government rejected the offer, and President Cleveland reversed his stance and rebuffed the queen's further pleas for interference. Willis remained ambassador to Hawaii until his death, after which an elaborate state funeral was held in the Iolani Palace. Irregularly cut. Light surface creases. Left edge creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
