ALBERT SCHWEITZER
Albert Schweitzer sends an autograph letter in French discussing the price of everything now.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Albert Schweitzer", 1p, 7¾x9¾. Lambaréné, 1945 April 2. In French, partly translated. To Rev. Canon Alexander, St. Paul's Cathedral, London. After thanking Alexander for his contribution for his hospital in honor of his 70th birthday (Schweitzer was born January 14, 1875), Schweitzer continues, in part: "One of the biggest expenses is the purchase of food...Also now the price of rice, corn, bananas, and manioc is rising in our country, lost to the virgin forest!...Even after the end of the war I shall be obliged to remain here for still a number of months in order to allow my assistants to return home, because of all these war years in Europe...And it will be necessary for me to initiate the new ones into the work...I hope your cathedral has not suffered too much with the bombing...." In the upper right, Schweitzer has also signed: "Dr Albert Schweitzer/Lambaréné - French/Equatorial Africa". St. Paul's Cathedral became a symbol of national endurance in England because the Cathedral survived a WWII bombing that destroyed much of the surrounding structures. Schweitzer, theologian, philosopher, physician and music scholar, was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work in Africa. He founded Lambaréné Hospital in French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon) in 1913. Slightly creased. Folds. Overall, fine condition.
