Photograph Inscribed and signed: "To Arthur Briskier/In remembrance of our voyage from America to Europe in 1949 Albert Schweitzer" in French. B/w 7½x4¾ overall, image 6x4¼ (one surface). Albert Schweitzer inscribed and signed this photograph taken in 1949, while visiting New Amsterdam, British Guiana in South America. That year, the renowned Schweitzer also voyaged to the United States for the first time. In June, the University of Chicago awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree to him; the next month, he attended the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation in Aspen, Colorado. Schweitzer dedicated his life to philanthropic work, using his own funds to build, equip and maintain the Forest Hospital in the French Equatorial Africa village of Lambaréné. While treating thousands of Africans yearly, Schweitzer developed a rapport with the natives of the village and came to know most of them by name. Eventually, he received support from individuals and foundations throughout the world, enabling him to expand the jungle hospital. The famed humanitarian was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on behalf of "the Brotherhood of Nations"; he used the $33,000.00 Prize to further expand the hospital. Queen Elizabeth awarded Great Britain's highest civilian honor, the Order of Merit, to the distinguished doctor in 1955. Slightly creased at corners. Fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 17¾x23.
