ALEJANDRO ROBAINA
Admiring his tobacco, Castro allowed Robaina to keep running his own
plantation.
Printed Art signed in ink: "Alejandro Robaina". Reproduction
of a pen and ink drawing, 4½x6¾ overall, image 3x5¼ (one surface). Captioned at
bottom in pencil: "1[of]6 7-4-98 Vegas Juan C Izaquirre H ". Cuban
cigar grower Robaina (1919-2010) was Cuba's most revered tobacco
grower; his leaves wrapped some of the best cigars in the world. Robaina
reportedly smoked his first cigar at the tender age of nine and started working
on his family's 40-acre tobacco plantation, which has been in continuous
operation since 1845. He had a role in the privatization of Cuban tobacco
farms after the 1959 revolution, when Fidel Castro nationalized many large
farms. Robaina was allowed to keep his farm, as long as he produced for the
state, and his yields were consistently higher than state farms.
Nowadays, almost all of the nation's farms are private, and they pattern
their business after Robaina's farm. Cuba honored him in the 1990s with an
award personally presented by Castro and, in 1997, the state tobacco monopoly
Habanos SA introduced the Vegas Robaina, making him the first living person to
have a cigar named after him. Fine condition.
