The Italian tenors signs a photograph in Buenos Aires in 1933.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Alessandro Ziliani" in Italian. B/w,
6x8¾. Nine-word inscription in Italian (not translated) by Ziliani, who has
dated his signature: "Buenos Aires 10-5-33". Embossed photographer's
imprint at lower left corner. Italian tenor Alessandro Zilini (1906-1977) made
his debut in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Dal Verme in 1929.
Known for his interpretations of Puccini (especially Tosca, La
Bohème and Turandot), Ziliani also lent his voice to operettas and
chamber music. He has been heard on a number of recordings, including
Verdi: La Traviata, on which he sang Alfredo, and on Maria Callas'
recording of Rossini's Armida (1952). Zilini was married to Italian
operatic soprano Mafalda Favero (1903-1981), who was a regular at La Scala
and starred at other noted opera houses. Minor surface creases, scratches and
smudges (most not evident head on). Paper remnant at upper left corner, light
tape stain at upper right corner. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Overall,
fine condition.
