ALEX GARD The famed celebrity caricaturist draws himself on an album leaf. Self-Caricature signed: "Gard", 6x4¼ album leaf. Dated (unknown hand) on verso: Sept. 7, 1938. Alex Gard (1900-1948) left Russia for France after the Bolshevik Revolution, drawing cartoons for the French newspaper Le Matin in the 1920s. Moving again to the US, he began working at Sardi's restaurant in New York City, drawing caricatures of celebrity diners in exchange for free meals. Altogether, he drew over 700 well known people, each one for a free meal. He also had weekly drawings in the entertainment section of the New York Herald Tribune, and he published several volumes of caricatures in the 1940s. Vertical crease through left eye. File and binding holes at left margin. No show through from ink note on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
