ALEXANDER ANDERSON
The Scottish poet Alexander Anderson handwrote, signed and dated this letter to J. R. Henderson in 1906, when he was Chief Librarian at the University of Edinburgh. In it, he gives Henderson unlimited access to the library.
Autograph letter signed "Alex Anderson/Librarian". With "Poet-[illegible] 'Surfaceman'." at bottom in unknown hand in pencil. 1 page, 4¼x7, on paper embossed with University of Edinburgh library coat of arms. May 19, 1906. Addressed to J. R. Henderson, Esq. In full: "Dear Sir, As it is some time to our next Library Meeting I take it upon me to grant you the privilege of the Library whenever you find it's convenient to come. Yrs Truly [illegible]". Anderson (1845-1909, born in Kirkconnel, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland) was a Scottish poet. Anderson often wrote under the pseudonym "Surfaceman", as he had worked as a platelayer or surfaceman on the Glasgow and Southwestern Railway beginning in 1862. One of his most well-known poems is Cuddle Doon. He started publishing poetry in the People's Friend of Dundee City, Scotland in 1870 and published his first volume of poetry, A Song of Labour and Other Poems, in 1873. He published a total of five volumes of poetry, including a posthumous one published by Alexander Brown. An average student, Anderson still managed to teach himself enough French, German and Spanish to read the masterpieces of those languages. He was made assistant and later Chief Librarian at the University of Edinburgh in 1880, the year after he published his last volume of poetry, Ballads and Sonnets. Lightly toned. Mounting remnants on verso. Folded once and unfolded. Ink transference from folding. Otherwise in fine condition.
