ALEXANDER TROWBRIDGE
Department of Commerce card signed by Alexander Trowbridge as Secretary of Commerce
Printed card signed "AB Trowbridge" in black ink. 5x3 card. With U. S. Department of Commerce seal in top left corner and "Secretary of Commerce printed in bottom right corner. Trowbridge (1929-2006) was a Bronze Star-decorated Korean War veteran and oil industry executive before joining the lackluster U. S. Commerce Department in 1965 as an assistant secretary. After boosting the department's morale and traveling widely to promote American commercial interests, he became Secretary of Commerce (1967-1968). At 36, he was the youngest member of President Lyndon Baines Johnson's cabinet and the youngest Commerce Secretary in history. After suffering a heart attack, Trowbridge resigned his position as Commerce Secretary in 1968 and became a member of many corporate boards and commercial groups, including president of the American Management Association and the National Association of Manufacturers. A longtime Democrat, he also served on commissions under Republican Presidents Richard Nixon and George H. W. Bush. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
