ALEXANDER BRAILOWSKY
Handsome bust-view photograph of the famed Russian-born pianist.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Mario J. Borgonovo,/with fond memories/of A. Brailowsky/Rosariio June 1936." in Spanish. B/w, 4x5½. Stamp of photographer in Buenos Aires on verso. Alexander Brailowsky (1896-1976) was a Russian-born pianist who is best known for his performances and recordings of Chopin, although his repertoire also included Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saëns, Liszt, Debussy and others. Brailowsky, who became a French citizen in 1926, had made his concert debut in Paris in 1919, and, using Chopin's own piano for part of his recital, he gave the first complete Chopin cycle in Paris in 1924. Brailowsky made his first recordings in Berlin between 1928-1934. In 1938, two years after he signed this photograph, Brailowsky gave a recital in New York, and he recorded in London for HMV. Minor surface creases and scratches (most not evident head on). Pencil notes (unknown hand), photographer's stamp and mounting remnants on verso (minor glue stain shows through to lower left corner). Overall, fine condition.
