Autograph Letter Signed: "A.D. Bache", 1p, 7x9, Fall River & New Bedford Hosp., 1844 October 8. To Hon. Joseph Grinnell, New Bedford. In part: "It is with the most sincere regret that I have learned your bereavment (sic), which had I known the inopportune letter would not have been written. You have kindly taken my attention & I felt obliged by the promise of the visit, which however I suppose will hardly now take place as we leave here very soon...I leave here to-morrow for Washington, to make the most of my time while my assistants are changing the station to Beaconwhite, near Cumberland R.I....." With integral leaf addressed by Bache. Physicist ALEXANDER D. BACHE was Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey (1843-1867) when he wrote this letter. He was one of the incorporators of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846 and was the first President of the National Academy of Sciences (1863). Joseph Grinnell represented Massachusetts in Congress as a Whig from 1843-1851. Remnant of red wax seal on integral leaf. Minor stain affects four words, lightly tanned at left edge of text and center blank portion from prior framing. Light pencil notations (unknown hand) at upper blank margin. Usual folds, creased at bottom corners Otherwise, fine condition.
