ALEXANDER deSEVERSKY.
Critical of U.S. defense policy.
Typed Letter signed: "Alexander deSeversky", 1p, 7¼x10½. On personal letterhead. New York. N.Y., 1949 April 21. To Brig. Gen. M. R. Nelson, US Air Force Special Weapons Group, Washington, D.C. In full: "In case you missed the issue, I herewith enclose a reprint of my article entitled "Our Antiquated Defense Policy" which appears in the April issue of The American Mercury. I thought you might enjoy reading it. Cordially." A Russian air ace in World War I, de Seversky (1894-1974) came to the United States in 1918 and founded the Seversky Aircraft Corp. (forerunner of Republic Aircraft), manufacturing pursuit planes, notably the P-47. Member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Seversky invented various airplane devices including a bombsight. His book advocating reliance on strategic bombing to win World War II was turned into an influential Disney documentary film in 1943, with Severesky in a starring role. Lightly toned and spotted in blank left margin. Paperclip residue in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
