ALEXANDER DE SEVERSKY
A letter from the World War I ace to an editor regarding the editor's views on another article written about Seversky's time in the USSR
Typed letter signed: "Alex de Seversky", in blue ink, 1 page, 5½x8. June 30, 1961. New York City, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Weinbaum, I read your comments on Eric Severeid's article, which were published in the June 24th issue of your paper, with much interest. I was most impressed with your realistic and constructive views on our bizarre behavior vis-à-vis the USSR. Under separate cover I am sending you my new book entitled "America: Too Young to Die", in which I attempt to explain the cause of the chaos and confusion which rein in Washington, particularly in the area of national defense. Keep up the good work! Sincerely yours". A Russian air ace in World War I, Alexander de Seversky (1894-1974) came to the United States in 1918 and founded the Seversky Aircraft Corp. (forerunner of Republic Aircraft), manufacturing pursuit planes, notably the P-47. Member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Seversky invented various airplane devices including a bombsight. His book advocating reliance on strategic bombing to win World War II was turned into an influential Disney documentary film in 1943, with Severesky in a starring role. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Small stains on right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
