The legendary Hollywood art director responds to a collector in 1985, mentioning his first years as Supervising Art Director for Universal Studios.
Typed letter signed: "Alexander Golitzen", in brown ink, 1 page 7¼x10½. No place, September 9, 1985. On his personal stationery to "Dear Mr. Stanhope", in full: "Herewith I am enclosing an autographed photograph of myself [item not included]. As it happens this is the only extra photograph I now have. It was taken some years back at the time I became Supervising Art Director at Universal MCA Studios. So-for whatever interest it any have, I'm also enclosing a relatively recent snapshot my wife took of me with a lifelong friend, Val Morozoff, when he was visiting us from Japan [item not included]. I am on the right in the picture wearing light grey clothes. From what you wrote I'm to be in distinguished company in your collection. It would be interesting to know how you chose to have me in that collection. With sincere good wishes." Golitzen served as the Supervising Art Director of Universal Studios from 1954-1974 when he retired. A prolific Hollywood art director with over 330 films to his credit, Alexander Golitzen (1908-2005) earned 3 Oscars for Best Art Direction with To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Spartacus (1960) and Phantom of the Opera (1943). He also racked up close to a dozen nominations for Arabian Nights (1942), That Touch of Mink (1962) Gambit (1966) and Airport (1970) among others. He collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on Foreign Correspondent (1940), and Clint Eastwood in the unforgettable psycho thriller, Play Misty for Me (1971). In 2011, he was posthumously inducted to the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame. Fine condition.
